In Outlook I used a tool called SpeedFiler from Claritude Software to help file mail quickly. When I moved to the mac and ThunderBird, I was suddenly plunged back a few years, and left being far less productive as a result. I found a couple of plugins which seemed to solve the problem (QuickFiler was for example), but unfortunately they either didn't live up to the promises or didn't work with the latest version of ThunderBird.
I have finally found what seems like an almost perfect solution though...Unlike SpeedFiler, Archive This doesn't automatically suggest the best folder for the mail to be placed in (very good and surprisingly accurate), what it does do very well is assign shortcut keys for your 9 most popular folders. The Add-in works really well with multiple selections as well as single message, and has started saving me time from the first minute I installed it. If you receive more than 3 mails a day, then I really recommend this Add-In.
Don't forget, to ensure that you backup the files used by your email software regularly. For mac ThunderBird users these files can be found in ~/Library/ThunderBird, this directory can easily be backed up by Mozy, if you're not a Mozy Backup user then signup for a free account now.
